ROME (Reuters) - Your heartbeat accelerates, you have butterflies in the stomach, you feel euphoric and a bit silly. It's all part of falling passionately in love -- and scientists now tell us the feeling won't last more than a year.

The powerful emotions that bowl over new lovers are triggered by a molecule known as nerve growth factor (NGF), according to Pavia University researchers.

The Italian scientists found far higher levels of NGF in the blood of 58 people who had recently fallen madly in love than in that of a group of singles and people in long-term relationships.

New Pill Cleanses Bowel Before Colonoscopy
I read where it is advisable to wait 12 hours before the second dosage of OsmoPrep for a colonoscopy. Some doctors prescribe taking 15 pills at 3:00 p.m.and the remaining at 8:00 p.m. Is there any problem with this dosage?

Metformin may help diabetics with heart failure
my husband is presently on metforin for the treatment of his blood sugar levels, resulting from diabetes. does metformin distroy the kidney? he is taking conversyl; a blood pressure stabilizer as well as a protection for the kidney or liver. he is presently taking four of these pills a day. what is your opinion on this information? sincerly, julie

Study: Drug-Resistant Staph Cases Rising
My son,Cody age 33, has been suffering from a flesh eating staph for over a year. The Drs. he has been dealing with can not fiqure it out. They have accused my son of doing this to himself. It has been a nightmare. When I read this article I felt hope that someone somewhere might listen and help us. I have been taking pictures of this problem. Please help us!!!!!!!!!!!!! Feds Hunt 'Biomarkers' for Cancer Treatment
Well, at least it is a start for these organizations. The single most neglected area of cancer research has been the development of methods and technologies to be matchmakers between individual cancer with individual cancer treatment. The single most neglected area of cancer treatment has been the unwillingness to utilize, or even study, the matchmaker technologies which have already been developed and which are already available. The only problem with this is, currently, you give the patient drugs and wait three weeks and then give more drugs and then wait three weeks, and then repeat tumor measurements. The “new” program is to develop tests which could be performed a few days to a week or so after treatment and give some indication of whether or not the treatment was likely to work. But you’d still have the patient getting potentially toxic and ineffective treatment and then you’d still have to wait weeks until you could try Plan B. They measure the drug effects on tumors in the patient (one treatment at a time), rather than in the laboratory (cell culture assay tests) where as many as twenty treatments can be done to see which one works best.

US to look for early signs of cancer drug effects
Wouldn't it be better to experiment in the petri dish rather than the human body? You give a patient drugs and wait three weeks and then give more drugs and then wait three weeks and then repeat tumor measurements (exam, scans, markers). Using biological markers, which would apparently be found via analysis of blood and tissue samples, or even imaging scans, and could potentially predict which cancer patients will respond to certain therapies, and hopefully reduce the "shotgun" approach to cancer treatment that many oncologists practice today. However, you have the patient getting potentially toxic and ineffective treatment and then you still have to wait weeks until you can then try Plan B. That's conceptually the same thing drug sensitivity tests are doing. They give drugs and then measure effects on tumors a few days later. That's what assay tests do, only they do it in the laboratory, rather than in the patient. And they can only try one or two treatments at a time. Assay tests can try up to twenty treatments at the same time and see which one works best. The key to improving drug sensitivity tests is related to the number and types of drugs tested. The more anti-cancer drug types there are in the selective arsenal, the more likely the system is to prove beneficial. In order to acquire sufficient data, tumors should be tested with at least two assay endpoints, and most often three, for sensitivity tests in any one patient. On average, up to twenty drugs and combinations at two concentrations in three different assay systems, is an effective way to avoid false-positive or false-negative data. Careful choice of drug doses and administration intervals also improves outcomes. Every cancer patient should have his/her own unique chemotherapy trial based on consultation of pathogenic profiles and drug sensitivity testing data. Research and application of drug sensitivity assays are being encouraged by growing patient demands, scientific advances and medical ethics. Drug sensitivity tests are not a luxury but an absolute necessity, and a powerful strategy that cannot be overlooked.

FDA Staff Questions Heart Risks of Merck's Arcoxia
I am a patient with both Crohn's Disease and the painful joints and nerve root pain that often accompanies this disorder. Prednisone, which was the only thing that alleviated my pain. However, Vioxx helped me so much that I was finally able to taper my Prednisone down to next to nothing, and I was pain-free and able to live a normal life. However, since having to come on Vioxx, I have steadily declined. The pain has become unbearable. I no longer have a life and can barely move. I have been in agony! My suggestions to the Merck Co. for their own protection from silly law-suits etc., is to simply have the patient sign an agreement that they know and understand the risks involved, in order to get the medication that has helped so many people. I would gladly sign a waiver, promising not to sue if I should die of a heart attack or stroke, in order to get my pain under control. I would do the same for the new drug they're working on "Arcoxia". As with all drugs, there are potential hazards. As patients sign waivers stating they understand the risks involved with general anesthetics, why not do the same for taking medications?? The benefits for so many people, far outway the the risks! Pomegranate juice for prostate cancer
There are plenty of sites that have reported this news. Unfortunately, there has been some inconsistency in the accounts. Most of the sites that might be considered reliable note an increase in doubling time from 14 months to 26 months. This includes the POM site (POM was involved in the study). The 37 months / 2 year improvement always appears as a Pantuck quote, so has some credibility. Yet another variation is whether 48 men took juice, or whether 24 of them were controls. The first version claims that doubling went from 14 to 26 months in the 48 men. The second (less reliably, I believe) has the "24 controls" at 14 months after the study. Too bad we do not have the actual study, rather than two reporters accounts of the presentation. -Patrick

I have read some interesting research studies lately that fish oil can help you reduce your weight. Apparently the EPA and DHA long chain omega-3 fatty acids in it, which is also a good anti-inflammatory substance, helps.

Yes, you should keep in mind that some studies appear to indicate that second hand smoke is far worse than smoking. So if she was around smokers at work or if her husband smoked, etc., that could also be the reason.

No Evidence That Echinacea Treats Colds
Echinacea may not be particularly effective in fighting colds, but I have read some credible studies that it replenishes he adrenal glands which makes it potentially effective for people who are quiting heavy coffee or other stimulant use.
