Overall, walking was the most common activity among the women, reported by 52 percent of pregnant women and 45 percent of nonpregnant women. Fewer pregnant women than nonpregnant women reported participating in aerobics or running/jogging, while gardening and swimming laps were reported by similar percentages of women in both groups.

To better understand the effects of different amounts of exercise on aerobic fitness, Duscha and colleagues randomly assigned 133 overweight sedentary men and women showing signs of rising cholesterol levels to 7 to 9 months of no exercise; low amount/moderate intensity exercise (the 12-miles per week walkers); low amount/vigorous intensity (12 miles of jogging per week); or high amount/vigorous intensity (20 miles of jogging per week).

Studies have shown that most individuals can achieve moderate levels of cardiorespiratory fitness through 30 to 40 minutes of brisk walking about 5 days per week. The highest level of fitness is likely to be achieved through vigorous jogging, running, biking, or swimming for 20 to 30 minutes per day about 3 to 5 days per week.
